Redactron vs iLovePDF and Smallpdf for redaction
Here is the verdict before the argument. For merging slides, compressing a brochure or turning a Word file into a PDF, the free suites are excellent and you should keep using them. For a document with a Social Security number on it, the architecture matters: theirs processes on their servers, ours never sees your file.
That is the whole disagreement. It is not a claim that iLovePDF or Smallpdf redact badly. Both say their redaction genuinely removes content rather than painting a rectangle over it, and we have no reason to doubt them. The rest of this page is about where the work happens, what it costs, and when it does not matter at all.
What "upload" actually means
Drop a PDF into a tool that processes on a server and the sequence is fixed by how the web works. Your complete, unredacted document is transmitted. It is written to a machine you do not control. Only then does the redaction run, and only later is the original deleted.
Both companies document this plainly. iLovePDF's privacy policy commits to deleting your content "within TWO (2) HOURS of being processed on ILOVEPDF's servers". Smallpdf's privacy notice says that for logged-in users "we delete User Files within one hour unless you save them", and names Hetzner as the provider that processes uploaded files. Publishing specific windows deserves credit. Plenty of free tools publish nothing at all.
The distinction is narrow but real. A deletion window is a policy commitment, kept by process and audit. It is not a physical property of the system. The unredacted file sat on someone else's disk for a while, and no promise made afterwards undoes that. For a brochure this is a non-issue. For a medical record it is the only thing on your mind.
One more detail if you use Smallpdf without an account. The policy then describes deletion within a reasonable period after the file was last opened, and says that period is "extended every time you reopen the respective User File". Worth reading before you assume the one-hour window applies to you.
Where the two claims on Smallpdf's page part company
One thing we could not resolve, so we will just show it. Smallpdf's Redact PDF page has a feature block stating "Process files 100% in your browser." Further down, the FAQ on the same page states "All processing happens on secure servers with strict access controls."
We will not read motive into that. Smallpdf publishes more than thirty tools, and a mixed architecture is an ordinary way to build a suite that size. The page may be describing different parts of the product in different sections.
So take it as a standard rather than an accusation. If where your file goes is load-bearing, do not settle it from marketing copy on any vendor's site, ours included. Open the network tab, load the file, and watch what leaves. Ours is built so it returns nothing.
The comparison
| Redactron | iLovePDF | Smallpdf | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where processing happens | Your browser. The file is never transmitted. | Their servers, per their privacy policy. A paid desktop app for Mac and Windows runs locally. | Their page states both browser processing and server processing in different sections. Privacy notice names Hetzner for uploaded files. |
| Redaction method | Export is rebuilt from flattened page images. No text operators or fonts survive, and the original metadata is not carried over. | Described as permanent removal. Their desktop write-up says covering text or applying visual redaction is not enough. | Described as true removal that eliminates the data rather than hiding it visually. |
| Automatic PII detection | Emails, phones, Social Security numbers, card numbers, IBANs, account and ID numbers, dates, money, mostly in US formats. Plus search-any-term and manual boxes. | Three preset types: credit cards, phone numbers, emails. Plus keyword search, manual boxes and whole-page redaction. | Not listed. Their published steps describe highlighting the areas you want removed. |
| Verification report | Yes, after every export. Re-opens the output and checks for no text, fonts or original metadata, the same page count, and every marked region fully black. A check of the file, not proof that everything sensitive was found. | Not listed on their redaction pages. | Not listed on their redaction pages. |
| Price | Free for 3 documents a month. Pro $39.99 once. Team $119.99 once (one key, 5 activations). | Free tier includes redaction with processing limits. Premium US$4/month billed annually (US$48/year) or US$7/month billed monthly. | Free tier includes redaction with a daily download limit. Pro is a subscription, billed yearly or monthly, priced by region. |
| Cost after 1 year / 3 years | $39.99 / $39.99 | US$48 / US$144 at the annual rate | Recurring. Check their pricing page for your region's current rate. |
| Works offline | Yes, after the first visit. Let it finish loading once, then it works with no connection, even after a reload. | Web tools need a connection. Their desktop app does not. | Web tools need a connection. |
| Other PDF tools | None. Redaction only. | Large suite: merge, split, compress, convert, OCR, edit, sign, compare, summarize, translate. | More than 30 tools across compress, convert, organize, edit, sign and AI features. |
What the free suites are genuinely good at
This is not a concession we make reluctantly. It is why both companies have enormous user numbers, and for most PDF work they are the right answer.
- Merging, splitting, reordering and compressing documents, where the content is not sensitive and convenience is the whole point.
- Format conversion, which is genuinely hard to do well in a browser. Word, Excel and PowerPoint conversion needs server-side rendering engines, and theirs are good.
- OCR on scanned documents. Redactron does not have OCR yet. iLovePDF does.
- Any job where one account covering thirty tools beats thirty bookmarks.
- iLovePDF's redaction specifically, if you want automatic detection of cards, phones and emails on a document that carries nothing more sensitive than that.
If your document is a menu, a slide deck or a public report, upload it. The argument on this page does not apply to you and we will not pretend it does.
When the architecture is the deciding factor
If you came here looking for an iLovePDF alternative for redaction specifically, this is the section that decides it. The calculation changes when the document itself is the risk: a payslip, a bank statement, a medical letter, an immigration file, a client contract, or anything with a full name next to an account number.
It changes again if you hold a professional confidentiality duty. Lawyers, doctors, accountants and social workers do not simply prefer to keep client files private. They are bound to, and in most frameworks the duty follows the file wherever you send it. We cover how those obligations interact with web tools in is it safe to redact a PDF online.
The other reason to care is that redaction fails quietly. A black rectangle over live text looks finished on screen and surrenders everything to a copy-paste. Courts and government departments have both shipped documents like that, and we collected the public cases in redaction failures. It is why our export destroys the text instead of covering it, and ships with a verification report you can check rather than a reassurance you have to accept.
What Redactron does not do
Three limits, stated plainly, because you will find them within five minutes anyway.
There is no OCR yet. If your PDF is a scan, there is no text layer for us to detect, so you will draw boxes over the sensitive areas by hand. That works, and flattening still removes the image data inside the box, but it is manual.
The export is not text-searchable. Rebuilding from flattened images is what lets us prove the text is gone, and the price of that proof is the text layer. Keep your original if you need to search it later.
And we do one job. iLovePDF and Smallpdf are Swiss army knives with real breadth. We are a single blade. For the tool most people reach for when they want redaction done properly, see how to redact a PDF without Adobe.
Questions people ask
Is iLovePDF's redaction tool safe to use?
For most documents, yes. iLovePDF describes its redaction as permanent removal rather than a black box drawn on top, and their privacy policy commits to deleting your file within two hours of processing. The caveat is not about their competence. The file reaches their servers unredacted first, so the two-hour window is a promise you are trusting rather than a limit on what is possible. If the document has no personal data in it, that trust is easy to give.
Can I redact a PDF for free online without uploading it?
Yes. Redactron runs entirely in your browser using pdf.js and pdf-lib, so the PDF is opened, edited and rebuilt on your own machine. Nothing is transmitted. The free tier covers three documents a month with no signup. You can check the claim yourself: open your browser's network inspector before you load the file and you will see no upload request. After your first visit, the page also works with your connection switched off.
Does Smallpdf redact PDFs in the browser or on a server?
Their redaction page carries both statements. A feature block says files are processed 100% in your browser, while the FAQ lower on the same page says all processing happens on secure servers. Their privacy notice names Hetzner as the provider that processes uploaded files. Smallpdf runs more than thirty tools, and a mixed architecture is a reasonable way to build that. If the answer matters to you, check the network inspector rather than any vendor's marketing copy, ours included.
Is a Redactron export still searchable text?
No, and that is the real cost of how we work. The export is rebuilt from flattened page images, which is what lets us prove the original text operators are gone. The trade is that the PDF has no text layer, so you cannot search or copy from it. For a document you are about to file or send to opposing counsel, that is usually fine. For a reference document, keep the original.
Do I still need iLovePDF or Smallpdf if I use Redactron?
Probably, and we would not pretend otherwise. Redactron redacts. It does not merge, split, compress, convert, OCR, sign or translate. Both companies publish libraries of thirty or more tools covering all of that, and they are good at it. The sensible setup for most people is a free suite account for everyday document work, plus a dedicated redactor for the few files that carry personal data.
