How to redact a PDF without Adobe
You do not need an Adobe subscription to redact a PDF. You need a tool that deletes the text instead of covering it. Redactron does that in your browser: drop the file in, mark what has to go, and export a PDF with the redacted content destroyed. The file never uploads, and there is no account.
That distinction matters more than the price. Two shortcuts look like redaction and are not, and the first one has put real names in front of the public.
Why a black rectangle is not a redaction
In Word, Google Docs and most free PDF viewers, a filled black rectangle is a drawing object sitting on top of the page. The text underneath is untouched, still in the file, exactly where it was. Preview on a Mac works the same way if you use its rectangle shape. Its separate Redact tool is different, and we cover it below.
Anyone can get it back. Open the file, select the page, copy, and paste into a text editor. The hidden text comes out with everything else, and the whole thing takes about ten seconds.
This is not hypothetical. In January 2019, Paul Manafort's lawyers filed a brief in federal court with black boxes over the sensitive passages. Reporters copied the text out within hours, including the detail that Manafort had shared 2016 campaign polling data with Konstantin Kilimnik. As the Columbia Journalism Review noted at the time, the filing came from well-paid lawyers in a case the entire press corps was watching.
It keeps happening. In December 2025, readers copied text out from under black boxes in at least one document in the Justice Department's Epstein files release, as Snopes confirmed. The same release had a larger problem: in January 2026, survivors' lawyers told ABC News that victims' names had been published with no redaction at all. We keep a running list in our redaction failures file.
The guidance has been public for two decades. The NSA published Redacting with Confidence in 2005, and its instruction still holds: sensitive information has to be removed from the document, not just hidden from view.
Why screenshotting is not the fix either
The second shortcut is smarter and still wrong. Draw the boxes, screenshot each page, then paste the images into a new document. That does destroy the text. It also costs you three things.
- Quality. A screenshot captures screen resolution, not print resolution, so body text goes soft and footnotes go unreadable. Printed, it looks like a photocopy of a fax.
- Your afternoon. A 40-page discovery document means 40 screenshots, 40 crops and 40 pastes, in the right order, with no page missed.
- Metadata, sometimes. Depending on what you rebuild the file in, the new document can still carry your name, the original title, and in some workflows the edit history. That data sits outside the visible page and travels with the file.
You end up with a worse-looking document and no way to prove it is clean.
What real redaction actually means
A real redaction removes content from the file. Two things have to be true of the finished document:
- The redacted text is gone from the file bytes. It is not covered by a shape or set to invisible. It is not there.
- The metadata is gone with it. Author, title and revision history are stored separately from the page and survive most edits.
Adobe Acrobat Pro does this correctly through its redaction tools. Redactron does it a different way, described below. A black rectangle in a word processor does neither.
How to redact a PDF without Adobe, step by step
Redactron runs entirely inside your browser, using pdf.js to read the document and pdf-lib to rebuild it. There is nothing to install and no server involved. After your first visit has finished loading, you can switch off your network connection and the whole process still works, even after a reload.
- Open the redactor. Go to redactron.app. The tool loads in the page. To try it first, load the sample document, which comes pre-filled with fake personal data.
- Drop your PDF in. Drag the file onto the drop zone, or click to choose one. Your browser reads it directly from disk. Watch the network tab if you like; nothing goes out.
- Review what it found. Redactron reads the document's text layer and flags emails, phone numbers, SSNs, card numbers, IBANs, account and ID numbers, dates, and money amounts, mostly in US formats. Each category appears as a chip with a count, and every hit is boxed on the page.
- Mark what has to go. Click a single finding to mark it, or click a category chip to mark the whole category at once. Names and client references match no pattern, so type them into the search box and every occurrence gets marked. Marked areas are labelled BURNS ON EXPORT, so you can see what will disappear.
- Draw boxes over anything else. Drag on the page to draw a redaction box by hand. Use this for signatures, letterheads, handwriting, photographs, and any page with no text layer.
- Burn and export. Press Burn and export. Redactron re-renders every page as an image, paints your boxes into those pixels in solid ink, and builds a new PDF out of the result. The original text layer, including everything under the bars, is not carried over, and neither are the original document properties. The new file records only Redactron as its creator and the time of export.
- Read the verification report. Before anything downloads, Redactron re-opens the file it just built and checks it: no text, no fonts, no annotations, none of the original metadata, the same page count as the original, and every marked region inside its page and fully black. If a check fails, you see a red warning, or the export stops and no file is made. The report shows a thumbnail of every page. It is a check of the output file, not proof that everything sensitive was found. Review every page, because automatic detection can miss things and only the boxes you marked are removed.
For a short document, that is under a minute. Redact a PDF free, no signup, no upload.
How to redact a PDF on a Mac with Preview
If you are on a Mac, you already have a free tool that does real redaction. Preview's Markup toolbar includes Redaction Selection. Apple's Preview guide says the tool removes selected text "from view", and that once you close the document "the redaction becomes permanent". MacMost tested it and found the redacted content was gone from the file, not hidden.
- Make a copy of the PDF first. Apple recommends redacting a duplicate to protect the original, and the redaction becomes permanent when you close the file.
- Open the copy in Preview and show the Markup toolbar.
- Choose Redaction Selection and drag across each piece of text you need to remove.
- Save and close the file, then open it again and run the copy and paste test below.
Know the gaps before you rely on it. Preview has no automatic detection, so you find every name and number by eye. Apple notes that table of contents entries that link to redacted text are not removed. Apple's guide also does not say whether the document properties, such as author and title, are cleared, so check them in Tools > Show Inspector before you send the file.
How to check any redaction, including ours
Never take a redaction on trust. This test takes ten seconds and works on any PDF.
- Open the exported file in any PDF viewer.
- Select all, with Ctrl+A on Windows or Cmd+A on a Mac, then copy.
- Paste into a plain text editor.
If anything pastes, the file still has a live text layer, and whatever sits under a black shape is readable to anyone who tries it. If nothing pastes, there is no text to recover.
A Redactron export pastes nothing, because there is no text in it to copy. In our own testing we byte-checked exports: 0 font objects, 0 text operators. Run the same test on output from any other tool.
What Redactron does not do
Two limits are worth knowing before you start. Both have workarounds.
Auto-detection needs a text layer. A scanned page is a photograph of a document. There is no text for the detector to read, so Redactron reports no findings on a scan even when the page is covered in personal data. Redactron warns you when it finds no text layer. Draw manual boxes instead. The burn works identically and the result is just as final. On-device OCR is on the roadmap.
The export is not text-searchable. Because every page is flattened to an image, you cannot search or select text in the finished file. That is not a bug, it is the trade: flattening is what makes sure nothing survives under the boxes. If you need the redacted document searchable, Acrobat Pro is the better tool.
Adobe and the free online tools, compared
| Redactron | Adobe Acrobat Pro | Free online redactors | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where your file goes | Stays in your browser | Stays on your machine | Uploaded to their servers |
| Removes the text itself | Yes | Yes | Varies by tool |
| Output stays searchable | No, pages are flattened | Yes | Varies by tool |
| Scanned pages | Manual boxes; OCR on roadmap | OCR built in | Varies by tool |
| Account required | No | Yes | Usually |
| Price | Free for 3 docs a month, then $39.99 once | $19.99 a month, annual plan | Free |
Acrobat Pro is a genuine redaction tool, and at $19.99 a month on the annual plan it is fair value for anyone who lives in PDFs. You get OCR, editing and searchable output alongside the redaction. If that describes your week, buy it, and our Redactron vs Adobe Acrobat comparison goes deeper. If you redact a handful of documents a year, a recurring charge is a strange way to buy a tool you open twice.
The free online redactors deserve more thought than they get. Most upload your document to a server, process it there, and send it back. The confidential file you are trying to protect gets handed to a third party first. We looked at what those terms of service actually permit in is it safe to redact a PDF online.
Frequently asked questions
Is Redactron actually free?
The free tier covers 3 documents a month with no account and no card. Pro is $39.99 paid once, and Team is $119.99 for one license key with 5 activations, also paid once. There is no subscription.
Does my PDF get uploaded to a server?
No. Redactron loads once, then reads and rebuilds your file inside the browser tab. You can check this yourself: open your browser's network panel while you redact and export, and no request carries your document. After your first visit has finished loading, you can disconnect from the internet and the tool still works, even if you reload the page.
Can I redact a scanned PDF?
You can, but not automatically. A scan is a picture of a page with no text layer, so the detector has nothing to read and will report no findings. Draw manual boxes over what you need to hide, and the export works exactly the same way. On-device OCR is on the roadmap.
Can I redact a PDF on a Mac without Adobe?
Yes. Preview's Redaction Selection tool removes the text you select, and Apple says the redaction becomes permanent once you close the document. It has no automatic detection, so you find every item by eye, and you should check the document properties separately. Redactron also runs in any current browser on a Mac.
Why can't I search the text in the exported file?
Because every page is flattened to an image before the new PDF is built. That flattening is what makes the removal absolute, and losing the searchable text is the price of it. If you need the redacted file to stay searchable, Acrobat Pro is the better fit.
Can someone recover the text under the black bars?
Not from a Redactron export. The bars are painted into the page pixels, and the new PDF is built from those images, so the original text layer is not in it. In our own testing we byte-checked exports: 0 font objects, 0 text operators.
Do I still need Adobe Acrobat for anything?
If you edit PDFs every day, run OCR on scans, or need redacted files that stay searchable, Acrobat Pro at $19.99 a month is a reasonable daily driver. If you only need a document redacted correctly today, you do not need a subscription for that.
Redact the document you came here with
Drop your PDF in, mark what has to go, and export. The text is destroyed rather than covered, the original author, title and history are not carried over, and your file never leaves the browser tab. Then run the copy and paste test on it yourself.
