Redactron vs Adobe Acrobat Pro for PDF redaction

Redactron team · Updated 30 September 2026

The verdict, before the argument

If you are shopping for an Adobe Acrobat redaction alternative, the answer turns on one question: how often do you redact?

If you redact most days, inside a wider document workflow, buy Acrobat Pro. It has optical character recognition for scans, it keeps the rest of your text searchable, it batches across folders, and it does forty other jobs you probably also need. On those points it beats us and it is not close.

If you redact occasionally, and you care where the file goes while you do it, Redactron costs about two months of Acrobat Pro, once. $39.99, no subscription, no upload, no account.

The rest of this page shows our working, including the parts where Adobe wins.

What both tools get right

Acrobat Pro's redaction is real redaction. When you mark content and select Apply, Acrobat removes it rather than covering it. Adobe's redaction documentation then offers a switch to "sanitize and remove hidden information", and saves the result as a new file. Used properly, Acrobat produces a genuinely safe document. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

Redactron reaches the same place by a different road. It rebuilds every page as a flattened image, then reassembles the PDF from those images. The redacted content is gone, along with the fonts and text operators that carried it. Every export ends with a verification report. Redactron re-opens the file it just built and checks that it holds no text, fonts or annotations and none of the original metadata, that the page count matches, and that every marked region sits inside its page and is fully black. If a check fails, you see a red warning, or the export stops. The report checks the output file. It cannot prove that everything sensitive was found, so it shows every page and asks you to review them. In our own testing we byte-checked exports: 0 font objects, 0 text operators.

The disasters we collect elsewhere almost never involve either method. They involve black rectangles drawn as annotations in a viewer, a third thing entirely.

Acrobat Pro price, over one year and three

Adobe's Acrobat pricing page lists three ways to pay for Pro. The annual plan billed monthly is US$19.99 a month. Prepay the year and it is US$239.88. Month to month is US$29.99 and you can cancel with no fee, which suits occasional users. The annual plan billed monthly charges a fee of up to half your remaining commitment if you cancel after 14 days, and the prepaid year is not refunded after 14 days.

Over three years, one person pays $719.64 on the annual plan or $1,079.64 month to month. Redactron Pro is $39.99, once, in year one. For five people it widens: five Acrobat Pro seats run to $1,199.40 a year, and a Redactron Team license is $119.99 once.

Two caveats keep those numbers honest. The first is that $239.88 does not buy redaction. It buys a PDF suite that includes redaction. If you also edit contracts, run OCR on scans, collect signatures and build forms, the per-job cost is low and the arithmetic above stops meaning anything. Judge Acrobat on everything it does.

The second is that Adobe offers a free trial of Pro. If you have exactly one document to redact, ever, the trial may cost you nothing, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Our case rests on the second document, and the eleventh, and the one that arrives eight months after you cancelled.

The privacy difference, stated precisely

This is where comparison pages usually cheat, so we will be careful. Desktop Acrobat does not upload your file. You install it, open a PDF from your disk, redact, save. The document stays on your machine. If anyone implies Adobe reads your desktop redactions, they are wrong, and you should trust the rest of their page less.

The real contrast is with the browser. Adobe's own online services FAQ puts it plainly: "Acrobat online services upload your files to Adobe cloud storage." Sign in and the file is saved to your Adobe account. Stay signed out and Adobe deletes it after a short period. That is a well-run cloud service, and it is still a copy of your document on someone else's computer. For a medical record or an unfiled witness statement, that is a decision rather than a detail. The free web converters are worse again, and we compare them on our iLovePDF and Smallpdf page.

Redactron is a browser tool that behaves like a desktop one. Your PDF is parsed and rebuilt by JavaScript in your own tab, using pdf.js and pdf-lib. There is no server to send it to. Do not take our word for it: load the page once and let it finish, pull the wifi, and redact anyway. It still works, even after a reload.

A last note on method. A 2022 research paper showed that the positions of characters around a redaction can narrow down the deleted word, even after the text is gone. The authors tested eleven tools, Acrobat among them, published mitigations and told the vendors. They also found that rasterising a page makes this harder but does not remove every leak. Flattening removes the exact glyph positions that attack used. Bar width still shows, as with any redaction.

When Redactron is the right answer

Our guide on how to redact a PDF without Adobe covers the free routes too, including the ones we would not recommend.

What Redactron does not do

The limits in one place, so you do not have to hunt for them. No OCR, so you can cover a scanned page by hand but not search it. Flattened export, so the finished file is images and the text is no longer selectable. No batch mode, no editing, no forms, no signatures. We do one job. Acrobat is a workshop.

Questions people ask

Can I redact a PDF without Acrobat Pro?

Yes, and our guide on how to redact a PDF without Adobe walks through the free routes and ours step by step.

Can Adobe Acrobat Reader redact a PDF?

No. Adobe's pricing page describes the free Acrobat Reader as a way to open and view PDFs, and its plan comparison does not list redaction for Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Express either. Redaction sits in Acrobat Pro, and Adobe's redaction documentation is written for the Pro desktop app. Drawing a black rectangle in Reader is an annotation, and the text underneath survives.

What does Acrobat Pro cost if redaction is the only feature I need?

The same as it costs anyone else. Adobe lists Acrobat Pro at US$19.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly, US$239.88 prepaid for the year, or US$29.99 month to month. There is no redaction-only tier. Adobe does offer a free trial of Pro.

Is redaction in a browser as safe as redaction on the desktop?

It depends entirely on whether the browser tool uploads. Most free online redactors send your file to a server. Redactron does not: the PDF is parsed and rebuilt by JavaScript in your own tab. Open your browser's network panel and watch. After your first visit has finished loading, you can disconnect from the internet and it still works.

Will Redactron work on a Chromebook or a locked-down work laptop?

Yes, because there is nothing to install and no account to create. Adobe's technical requirements list the Acrobat desktop app for Windows 10 v1809 or later, Windows 11 and macOS 13 and later. If you cannot install software, or you are on ChromeOS or Linux, that route is closed and a browser tool is not.

Try it on the document in front of you

Three documents a month are free, and the file never leaves your browser. If it fits how you work, Pro is $39.99 once. If it does not, buy Acrobat. We have said exactly when.
